Tips To Troubleshoot Overheated Car Engines

Car engines are capable of working within a certain temperature range. This uniform temperature is required by the engines to perform their functions properly. Overheating is a condition when the ability of car’s cooling system to absorb, transport and drive off the heat is diminished. Over heat can cause disastrous engine failure, thereby affecting the overall performance of the car. Engine overheating is a common problem mostly found in places of extreme weather condition.

The causes of engine overheating can be anything like damaged engine gaskets, coolant leaks, defective thermostat, poor heat inside the engine, inadequate airflow through the radiator, a defective radiator cap or loose water pump impeller. Well, here are a few tips as how to make the engine cool:

  • On engine overheating, turn off the air conditioner, because it makes the engine work harder. On the other hand, turning the heater on can help escape the heat from the engine.
  • Turn over the climate controls to vent, while switch on the heater and the fan. The reason behind turning on the heater is that it works by using extra heat from the engine in order to heat the incoming air. Thus, it helps pull as much heat as possible off the engine, which is being blown into the car cabin.
  • Whenever you are driving, turn off the engine in every traffic signals, which will give the engine a break to cool down. Also, when the temperature gauge indicates any signals of overheating, immediately turn off the engine to avoid car breakdown.
  • Always make sure you drive at a slow and steady speed. Also changing the speed frequently helps in minimizing problems related to engine overheat.
  • Water or other coolants can also be used to reduce the temperature of the engine. However, you need to be extra careful while pouring water to the engine, because if you are adding cold water to a very hot engine, it may probably crack the engine block.
  • Dampened cloth (with water) can also help cool down the engine.
