Nason, To Submit Resignation To NHTSA

According to reports, Nicole Nason, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA will be resigning next month.

Nason joined the NHTSA on May 31, 2006. She has been the nation’s chief motor vehicle safety regulator since then and she has been responsible for the implementation of several important auto safety regulations. Earlier, she was the assistant secretary for government affairs in the Department of Transportation since July 2003.

Nason has informed about her decision to resign to Transportation Secretary, Mary Peters. She said, “I informed her that we would put together a list of our top priorities for the rest of the year and I would present it to her by next week.”

During her tenure, Nason played a significant role in implementing NHTSA’s proposal that automakers increase fuel economy by more than 3 percent a year over the coming decade.

Nason announced in September 2006 that NHTSA would require electronic stability control in terms of the potential for saving lives and reducing injuries by the 2012 model year.

She also oversaw new regulations to improve child seat ratings and to require seat belts on some smaller school buses.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, representing the Detroit 3, Toyota and six other automakers, credited Nason with “involving all stakeholders in proactively working on critical safety issues.”
