Myths About Winter Driving

Winter driving is very risky and can be hazardous, because of the poor road conditions and reduced visibility caused by heavy snowfall or rainfall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, you are 36 percent more likely to be involved in a car accident in January than July. Therefore, preparations for the winter season as well as knowing how to react if extreme weather conditions are faced on the road are the keys to safe winter driving or traveling. As winter is already here, this would be the perfect time to debunk the common myths about winter driving. Here are a few of them:

  • There is no difference between all-season tires and winter tires

Fact:
There is no truth to this statement. The truth is that there are different types of tires for various climates and weather conditions. Particularly, the tread in winter tires are 30 percent deeper than that of all-season tires, and therefore they grip more effectively! Whenever you prepare for tire change, consult the experts for getting the most appropriate tires for your vehicle.

  • All-season tires are good enough for city driving

Fact:
It is wrong again! The rubber used to make all-season tires is different from that of winter tires. The rubber in all-season tires tend to lose elasticity and traction as the temperature drops below between -8º C and -15 º C, but the rubber in winter tires does not lose elasticity until the temperature drops down to -40 º C.

  • The weather is good, the road is clear, I can’t see any ice… Let’s go! I can drive just like I do in the summer

Fact:
This is definitely not a great idea! Remember, the tire traction of your vehicle tires is not the same as in the summer. In winter, traction drops along with the temperature. And when it couples with ever-present danger of black ice, it can be the most hazardous situation you could face. Moreover, during winter, road conditions can change over every few kilometers.
