Know About Car Battery

Car battery, an integral part of a car is instrumental in supplying energy to the car engine. It has a lot to do with the smooth car operations and performance. Car batteries, commonly known as SLI (Start, Light and Ignition ) batteries, are used to start, light and ignite the car engine. A car battery is placed under the bonnet. Some popular brands of car battery across the globe include Exide, Tata Greens, Amaron, and Amtek.

The basic function of a car battery is to provide power required for starting, lighting and igniting the engine, as well as other electronic accessories, especially when the combined load of the car operations exceeds the engine capacity. Besides, car batteries are being used to filter and stabilize power. Apart, they also maintain the level of fluid and reduce the amount of impurities in the engine.

Car batteries contain sulfuric acid electrolyte, that works to produce gases after the  battery is being recharged and explodes during ignition. For the process of production and explosion of gases a battery requires good ventilation and many other safety measures in order to ensure the safety of the car and its driver.

Types of Car Battery:

Car batteries can be classified on the basis of maintenance and constructions. Based on maintenance, car batteries are classified into:

  • Low Maintenance: Batteries that require low maintenance are known as low maintenance batteries. They also need to be replaced after a definite interval of time.
  • Maintenance Free: Maintenance batteries are the ones that last longer with greater overcharge resistance, reduced failures and reduced terminal corrosion. They generally require less maintenance and are also more effective than the low maintenance batteries.

Based on construction, car batteries are divided into:

  • Cranking/Shallow Type: These batteries are designed in an attempt to make them supply quick energy for ignition. They provide a high electric current in a very short period of time.
  • Deep Cycle Type: These are designed to provide continuous energy for a long period of time.
