When you buy a brand new car, this is obvious that you have lots of expectations from your new purchase. But, in case if it is costing you big amounts at the car repairing shop, then there is lemon law for you! Now, what is lemon law? This is a law amended by American government that provides protection to the buyers of brand new vehicles that do not perform up to their standard quality. The cars that qualify for the protection are known as lemon cars. However, to be a lemon car, your vehicle must fulfill certain conditions.

A vehicle can be claimed a lemon car if it suffers a number of repairing attempts by its dealer. Or, if it is out of service for more than 30 business days, then the vehicle is a lemon! But, in case of a used car, the conditions are somewhat different. Used car should meet the following two conditions in order to come under the lemon law:

  • Your can get a compensation for the used car if conditions satisfy one of these warranties- if the car was "Certified" by the dealer with a warranty of 1 year or if you obtained an extended warranty from the dealer especially for 5 years warranty or more.
  • If there is no manufacturer’s warranty, your car can fall outside the lemon law and this may be the violation of consumer protection laws. Some of the problems that violate Lemon Law include mechanical defects, Rental car or taxi or Stolen or reconstructed car.

Thus, before buying a used car or a new car, you should always check car history, VIN (vehicle identification number), performance etc. to know about the car and to find whether it is a lemon or not. Vehicle Identification Number is a unique identification code for a particular car and this can provide you with lots of information about a car. You can find out if your car is a lemon or not with the help of a VIN number check.
