Direct Fuel Injection

Direct fuel injection is one of the latest technologies in the automotive world. This is a fuel-delivery technology that enables gasoline engines to burn fuel more efficiently, as well as allows greater control and precision, thereby resulting in more power, cleaner emissions and better fuel economy! Moreover, this direct fuel injection system allows higher compression ratios, delivering higher performance even with lower fuel consumption. But, how does a direct fuel injection engine work?

Typically, in order to work, a gasoline engine makes use of a mixture of gasoline and air into a cylinder. After this, the mixture is being compressed with a piston, and then ignited it with a spark. This process results in an explosion, which drives the piston downwards and ultimately produces power. Before the introduction of direct fuel injection technology, automakers used indirect fuel injection systems. An indirect fuel injection system pre-mixes the gasoline and air in the intake manifold, outside the cylinder. But, in a direct-injection engine, the gasoline and air are not pre-mixed. In this case, the air comes in through the intake manifold, but the gasoline is injected directly into the cylinder. A direct fuel injection system has a number of advantages over the traditional fuel-delivery system.

Advantages of direct fuel injection

  • As direct fuel injection systems are combined with precise computer management, they allow more precise control over fuel metering or how much fuel is being injected; and injection timing or the exact time when the fuel is introduced into the cylinder.
  • The location of the injector also enables a more optimal spray pattern, which breaks the fuel into smaller droplets. As a result, the combustion process  is performed more efficiently, which means more power from each drop of gasoline!
