The report for this decision has been announced by Kyodo news. The report also includes news that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is also looking forward to providing a more permanent and durable solution to this problem. They are almost done with the thinking process of the solution and it will soon be worked upon.

Also, Toyota has volunteered to fix or change the accelerator pedals of all the 4 millions vehicles in the U.S. that are involved in the recall. This solution was identified by Toyota as they believe that the accelerator pedals of their vehicles are not at all defective and therefore, doesn’t require a recall by the government.

Today only, NHTSA declared that they are yet to decide what parts would be worked upon and what parts would be changed or replaced. This indirectly suggests that they are not only focusing on the accelerator pedal but are also considering other parts of the car as well. There might be other parts too that need to be fixed or replaced. Hideaki Honma, who is a representative on behalf of Toyota, has said that the talks are still in the process and no final decision has been made as of now by Toyota and the NHTSA. They have not yet reached at a solution of the problem.

The vehicles that would be under investigation and the target of the solution have been mentioned in the report. They would include Toyota’s Prius, Camry, Avalon, Tacoma and Tundra. The Lexus models that would be included are the Lexus IS250, IS350 and ES350 models.

Toyota Corp. has been involved in around 2,000 cases with the same problem of unintended acceleration since the year 2000. There have been around 19 fatalities due to these crashes. The Federal regulators have said that this has been the worse scenario so far in comparison with other automobile manufacturers. There were many class-action lawsuits that were filed against Toyota Corp. due to these incidents and till date, they are still lying in the early stages of hearing and no judgment has been passed upon these cases so far.

Nissan-brand sales were up 14.2 percent to 97,417 vehicles in August, driven by a 32.6 percent jump in light-truck sales, Al Castignetti, who is the vice president and general manager of Nissan Division, told Reuters.
 
August proved to be a very tough month for the company as their US sales fell by a huge margin of 9.4 percent to 211,533 vehicles.

 
The sales fell 20.3 percent in the month and are down 18.1 percent for the year to date compared with the same period of 2007, according to a statement given by the GM Motors.

The sales even slipped by a huge margin of 25.5% as compared to the last year of 151021 vehicles, at the Ford Motor Co.

Ford confirmed that the company sold 1.41 million vehicles in the month of August, down 15.3 percent from the same period last year.

Chrysler LLC, said, “U.S. sales fell 34 percent in August and are down 24 percent for the year.”

In one of their statements, the company noted that their sales improved 12 percent over July.

Toyota

According to the company, “August sales for luxury-brand Lexus dropped 9.1 percent from the same month a year ago to 29,281 units. Lexus sales slipped 14.7 percent for the year to date compared with the same eight months of 2007.”

Toyota managed to post a gain in the Camry and Camry Hybrid, which gained 3.3 percent to 44,064 units, but the major reason of its concern is the sales of the smaller Corolla, that fell by a huge margin of 3.4 percent to 29,443.

"Camry is ahead of last year’s number. If it’s not a record (year-to-date) number, it’s close to it," said Irv Miller, who is the group vice president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.
Even the Scion sub-brand, that is involved in Toyota Division totals, fell by a margin of 19.7 percent to 11,867 units.

"We see August as a marginal improvement over July. There is not a lot of reason to go running down the street with balloons and flags because there are still energy, housing and credit issues," Miller said. "People are still nervous. But we are cautiously optimistic that August might be the start of pulling us out from where we were." he further said.
 
Honda

American Honda Motor Co., confirmed the fact that it sold 146,855 vehicles in August, which is almost 7.3 percent less than the last year.
 
"Meeting the demand for fuel-efficient vehicles remains a priority," Dick Colliver, who is the executive vice president of sales for American Honda, said in a statement.

"In addition to the Civic and Civic Hybrid, the sales increase of the all-new Pilot shows that fuel-efficient technologies such as our variable cylinder management system are being well-received in Honda’s light-truck segment." he further said.

The Tundra is manufactured primarily at the San Antonio assembly plant and on the other hand, the Sequoia is manufactured in Princeton, Ind. Because of the high inventories, the company idled the further production of these vehicles on Friday, Aug. 8. It has been said that Toyota will resume the production in mid-November.

At San Antonio, the company is managing the idled workers by keeping them busy with various ventures, instead of laying them off.

The U.S. Sales for Tundra have declined drastically by 15.5%  from 105,990 a year ago, to 89,929 this year. The all new Sequoia have shown a reversed trend as far as the “sales” are concerned. It has moved up by a 32.8 percent margin to 19,367 in U.S. sales through July as compared to 14,582.

The sales of Pickups and large Trucks and SUVs have declined in the past four to five months as the oil prices have driven more amount of consumers towards the purchase of small and  fuel-efficient cars.

The company excels in importing tens of thousands of cars into the U.S. from Japan, including the very famous Camry sedan, but lags behind in exporting from its operations here.

Toyota announced that it will build the hybrid Prius in the United states for the first time as the automaker adjusts its U.S. manufacturing operations to meet consumer demands for smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles. Prius will be the second hybrid car next to the hybrid version of Camry sedan, that is being scheduled to build outside Asia. Camry’s hybrid version is built in Georgetown, Kentucky.

The automaker will start building Prius in late 2010 at a new plant in Blue Spring, Mississippi. It was originally scheduled to produce the Highlander sport utility vehicle at the plant.

The Princeton plant in Indiana will now make the Toyota Highlander SUV. Its production will begin in fall, 2009.

Reportedly, Highlander sales were down 38.9 percent in June. Its total sales for the first half of this year were down 5.2 percent as compared to the same period a year ago.

Other production shifts in the face of the changing market include consolidation of Toyota’s Tundra full-size pickup truck at the San Antonio plant in late 2009. Tundra is currently built at plants in Indiana and Texas. In addition, Toyota will temporarily suspend Tundra and Sequoia production beginning August 8 due to the declining overall market for full size trucks and SUVs.

Toyota said such moves have been taken as the U.S demand for trucks and SUVs continues to decline. Toyota’s total U.S. sales fell by 21 percent in the month of June as compared with 2007.

Tundra’s U.S. sales fell 52.9 percent to 10,238 vehicles in June, as compared with 21,727 vehicles sold in June 2007. In the first half of this year, Tundra sales were down 7.6 percent compared to the same period of 2007.

The sales of the Prius also fell but this was because Toyota failed to keep up with the growing demand for this fuel-efficient hybrid. Its sales declined 33.7 percent in June to 11,765 vehicles. And for the first half of 2008, sales declined 3.2 percent to 91,440 vehicles, as compared to 94,503 units sold during the first half of 2007.

Jim Wiseman, vice president for Toyota Motor engineering and Manufacturing North America said, “The truck market continues to worsen, so unfortunately we must temporarily suspend production. But this good news about production mix demonstrates our long-term commitment to our North American operations and to our team members, suppliers and communities where our plants are located.” He further added, “By using this downturn as an opportunity to develop team members and improve our operations, we hope to emerge even stronger.”

While making these changes in production line, Toyota assures that the workers who build its trucks and SUVs as well as workers who build engines for the Tundra and Sequoia will stay on the job through the shutdown. The San Antonio plant employs 1,900 people, while the Princeton plant employs nearly 4,500.

Toyota is planning to launch two new hybrid vehicles that will debut at the 2009 Detroit auto show and will start of the production of lithium ion battery next year.

The two vehicles- one badged a Toyota and the other a Lexus, both will sit above the third-generation Prius car. In addition, the company will also show a redesigned Prius, due in 2009.

The executive vice president of Toyota, Masatami Takimoto said that the new hybrid models will be larger than the Prius. He added, “It’s a totally new car.”

All the planned vehicles are expected to use nickel-metal hybride batteries. The long awaited lithium ion batteries are expected to debut in Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid in 2010. Panasonic EV Energy Co. which makes batteries for Toyota’s hybrid vehicles will start maufacturing the lithium ion batteries in 2009.

Lithium ion batteries are seen as a key to jump-starting the market for low-emissions gasoline-electric hybrid and pure electric vehicles. They are lighter and more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride batteries now used in hybrids.

The company is already in a process of setting up a 50-person strong team of battery researchers this month to develop a post-lithium ion battery with better performance, said Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe. 

Honda Motor Co. will launch four hybrid vehicles with lithium ion batteries by 2015 and Nissan Motor Co. plans to hit the market with production of lithium ion batteries next year.

Apart from these, Toyota is taking stake in other green initiatives including new 1.3-liter and 2.5-liter gasoline engines featuring stop-start technology, due this year; a new highly efficient compact six-speed manual transmission, arriving in the fall and cutting carbon dioxide emissions from factories to 35 percent of 2001 levels by 2010.
