“There have been reports in the media that Tata Motors is among potential buyers for shares in Mazda Motors. Tata Motors clarifies that the report is incorrect,” said Ray.

Ford Motors is considering selling about 20 percent stake out of total 33.4 percent of Mazda. The automaker is in the process of approaching prospective companies for the sale. A lot of speculations have been made, which say that Tata Motors would be the one to buy Ford’s stake in the Japanese company. Tata Motors had bought the Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford earlier this year for $2.3 billion.

The company officials said that it will provide the training at its 1,000 largest dealerships and some of the smaller dealerships at central locations. According to Mark Grueber, the F-150 marketing manager, the upcoming training is going to be the most comprehensive dealership training, which will run through end of this year.  

The launch of new F-150 is quite a challenge for Ford, as the slow-down sales of the pickups and other larger vehicles have been apparent to all. Reportedly, F-series U.S. sales have plummeted 25.2 percent through August, as compared to the same period a year ago.

The new F-150 includes an  SFE edition that stands for “superior fuel economy.” The SFE pickup will achieve 15 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway. And the SFE package will be available on the F-150 SuperCrew XL and XLT 4X2 pickups, with 4.6-liter, three-valve V-8 engines and 5.5-foot beds.

In an attempt to meet the job-cutting goal, Ford is offering retirement incentives to eligible employees at the Oakville assembly plant. The retirement package includes a $75,000 allowance and $35,000 to purchase a new Ford vehicle, said More.

The job cuts are the result of the weakening sales for crossover vehicles. The company hopes that the significant step will help align staffing with production, which was slowed because of “softening of vehicle sales in the U.S.,” said More.

According to Autodata Corp., the U.S. crossover sales fell 12 percent industry-wide in August as compared to a year earlier. However, through August, U.S. sales of the Ford  Edge rose 11.7 percent from the same period in 2007. The sales for Lincoln MKX were down  4.0 percent in the same month. Ford has sold a total of 5,593 units of Ford Flex, including 2,010 in August. The Ford Flex debuted this summer.

The Chicago assembly plant makes the Ford Taurus X crossover, Mercury Sable and Lincoln MKS. Reportedly, the production at the plant fell 15 percent last year to 131,646, which was half of the plant’s capacity for two shifts. The company said, the sales of Ford, Mercury and Lincoln cars dropped almost 9 percent in August from a year ago. Ford’s overall U.S. sales were down 26.5 percent, as compared to last year.

“Sales of MKS are strong,” said Ford spokesman Angie Kozleski. “There is a decline in the large car segment that is more attributable to the other products.”

The cut in the production is the result of the company’s poor sales. Along with other U.S automakers, Ford’s sales of larger vehicles have declined, Kozleski said. The company has already cut its production plan for the rest of 2008, because of  lower sales to rental car companies; lower production associated with the transfer of Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator assembly operations from Michigan to Kentucky and a cut in its U.S. industry sales forecast.

At the recent Democratic National Convention, Ford Motor Co. executives announced that the company needs low-interest federal loans, but they didn’t mention the amount of  money they need. Ford purchasing chief, Tony Brown said, “We’re still dimensioning.”

Michigan Senator, Debbie Stabenow, who was also present at the convention told that, because of the the rapid deterioration of financial markets in the U.S., federal loans have become urgent.

She also mentioned the provision of energy bill that was signed into law last year. The Congress authorized $25 billion in the energy bill, which set aggressive fuel-efficiency standards and created a loan program to help automakers develop and build vehicles with higher fuel economy.

However, the funding has not yet been appropriated and rules have not been finalized by the Department of Energy.

Along with the automakers, auto suppliers are now also seeking federal loans.

Ann Wilson, senior vice president of government affairs for the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, said at the convention that, her members have been also asking for some funds under the loan program, approved by the U.S. government last year.
