Chrysler LLC has filed a lawsuit against Getrag, which is a German parts maker.

The lawsuit has been filed because of the fact that Getrag misrepresented its ability to secure financing in order to build a transmission plant in Tipton, Ind. It was worth $530 million.

Chrysler said in a statement late Wednesday that Getrag and Getrag Transmission Manufacturing LLC failed to use good faith efforts to obtain financing for the joint venture.

The automaker added that it is seeking damages for "wrongful conduct" and a release from reimbursing Getrag’s costs related to the plant.

Randy Cyman, who is the human resources director for the Tipton facility, said Thursday that Getrag had no comment on the lawsuit. He said construction at the plant, which he described as "80 percent complete," was continuing.

Chrysler spokesman David Elshoff said the plant’s future was unknown. He added the reasons behind the lawsuit were unrelated to the recent tightening in the credit markets.

"This suit is a result of breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation," Elshoff said. "It is not related to today’s credit issues."

The plant is an integral part of what the automaker calls its "powertrain offensive." The plant was indulged in a $3 billion investment in order to launch new engines as well as fuel-efficient, dual-clutch transmission developed with the German parts maker, Getrag.

It was expected that the facility would employ 1,400 workers : 1,170 would be working at the plant and 230 would be working for other complimentary jobs in the nearby Kokomo.

Chrysler LLC is in talks with the German axle maker ZF Friedrichshafen AG to operate the automaker’s new axle plant in Marysville, Michigan. The plant is under construction now and it is expected to be operational in 2010.

According to sources, the $700 million Marysville axle plant would replace Chrysler’s Detroit Axle and would probably use a modified Mercedes axle-making technology, which will generate less internal friction, improving fuel economy. The new plant is part of the $3 billion investment, that Chrysler announced in April 2007 to produce more fuel-efficient V6 engines and other related components.

ZF is one of the world’s largest auto parts makers, that produce transmissions, steering systems, axles and chassis components. It supplies axle to the Mercedes SUV assembly plant in Vance, Alabama.

Chrysler LLC announced yesterday that, it is “exploring strategic options for the Dodge Viper business,” which could also include the sale of the brand in near future.

Bob Nardelli, Chrysler’s Chairman and CEO, said that the company has “been approached by third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities for Viper.”

According to the company, “This strategic review comes as the Company focuses on enhancing its core business and leveraging its assets.”

“As the Company evaluates strategic options to maximize core operations and leverage its assets, we have agreed to listen to these parties. We will do so keeping in mind the best interests of those who have shown tremendous support for the
vehicle- including employees, suppliers, dealers and a worldwide group of loyal Viper owners and enthusiasts,” said Nardelli.

“Viper is an integral part of this Company’s heritage. While this is a strategic review, our intent would be to offer strong operational and financial support during any potential transaction, in order to ensure a future for the Viper business and perpetuate the legacy of this great vehicle,” he added.

The Dodge Viper is a low-volume, V-10 powered sports car, that was introduced at Detroit Auto Show in 1989. The car was first produced in 1992 and Chrysler has made about 25,000 Vipers since then.

The 600-hp sports car is built at the Chrysler’s Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit, which employs about 110 workers. The plant makes about 11 Viper cars daily.

At the Management Briefing Seminars on Friday, Chrysler LLC’s purchasing chief John Campi spoke about new approach to dealing with the automaker’s suppliers in order to maintain good relationships.

The purchasing chief also announced the automaker’s goal to cut its supply costs by 25 percent within three years with a new approach to launch a “supplier of choice” program in which Chrysler will have not more than ten suppliers. The suppliers will become partners of the automaker in the development for vehicles they supply.

Campi however said that Chrysler has already named the Japan-based Denso Corp. as the first “supplier of choice.” According to Campi, as a partner, Denso will participate fully in product development on the programs it supplies and also briefed that because of the supplier’s global capabilities it won the designation.

Chrysler will have about ten suppliers in the select group and the automaker is likely to reveal the other suppliers’ names within next 30 days.

The automaker has about 300 important component suppliers out of about 800 that are basically North America-centric. And out of the 300 suppliers, 200 to 250 will remain long-term suppliers, including 100 new suppliers, said Campi.

Chrysler LLC plans to build the new Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2010, as said the company’s Vice chairman Tom LaSorda on Thursday. The new vehicle will get a unibody construction, variable valve timing and a fuel-efficient V6 engine.

The automaker also said that it will spend $1.8 billion in retooling the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit. The plant will produce the Jeep Grand Cherokee which will use Chrysler’s new Phoenix powertrains.

LaSorda said, “This investment in our future products and at Jefferson North will enable the Company to produce a future generation of vehicles more efficiently, with world-class quality and an improved environmental footprint,” “Furthermore, this commitment reinforces the long-standing partnership between Chrysler LLC, the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan.”

The company said that the renovation program will include product development functions and new, state-of-the-art manufacturing systems in the plant. The total investment will go towards the design, development, components and supplier support associated with the new vehicle programs.

Frank Ewasyshyn, Chrysler LLC Executive Vice President of Manufacturing said, “We believe the Jefferson North makeover will give the facility and our Company the upper hand on how responsive we can be to shifts in consumers’ needs and changing market demands.” “We also believe this will be achieved while continuously improving the quality of our vehicles that will be produced in Detroit,” he added.

The Jefferson North assembly was opened in 1991. It presently builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee for the North American market and the Jeep Commander.

The plant will complete its retooling by the end of 2009 and be operational in early 2010. The retooling will create roughly 400 jobs at the plant, said the company officials.

In order to reduce travel and energy expense, Chrysler LLC is on negotiating terms with United Auto Workers Union, to put all the factory employees on four-working days with ten hour shifts from a five, eight hour days shift.

The manufacturing chief of the company, Frank Ewasyshyn said that this new curriculum would certainly affect most of its plants excluding those who are already involved in overtime, like Belvidere assembly in Illinois and Sterling Heights assembly in suburban Detroit. “The remaining plants likely would qualify,” Ewasyshyn confirmed the statement at the Management Briefing Seminars.

Ewasyshyn further said the schedule is very analogous to what some of the other government bodies are adopting to reduce their energy and travel expense. They are also going for a four-day 10 hour schedule rather than implementing five eight-hour working days.

To approve the new schedule for the employees, Ewasyshyn said Chrysler is having talks with the international UAW and the locals who represent the affected plants. It reduces costs for workers and "reduces our operating costs," Ewasyshyn said.

Chrysler is further testing this new schedule in a parts distribution center in Atlanta.

Ewasyshyn said that he would not be able to elaborate on specific savings, but he said it was less than 10 million dollars annually

Just two weeks after Chrysler Financial annunciate that it was exiting the auto leasing business, company’s two top executives stepped down from their individual positions.
Paul Knauss, who was the financial president and CEO of the company and William Jones, who was the COO, both declared their retirement immediately after the announcement made by the company.

Thomas Gilman will take the place of Paul Knauss as the CEO and vice chairman of the company. He has earlier served as the Chief Financial Officer of the company and was most recently a senior advisor for Cerberus, which is the private equity owner of Chrysler.

Darryl Jackson will take the place of William Jones as the COO of the company and will also handle the sales and marketing department of the company as well. Jackson previously headed Chrysler’s U.S. Sales as he was the vice president of the company.

Knauss and Jones "have made significant contributions to Chrysler Financial’s success over the years," Gilman said in a statement.

"While it is difficult to lose two seasoned leaders, Chrysler Financial is on solid ground, and I appreciate their dedication and commitment to ensuring the company is well positioned for the future."

The company announced that it will merge the positions by naming Gilman executive vice chairman and CEO. It also said the decision will allow the organization to "focus on its core business."

The company decided to exit the leasing business because of declining residual values on leases.

Companies like General Motors and Ford Motor Co. have taken billion-dollar charges just because they run their leasing businesses. As Chrysler is a privately held company, it is not needed for the company to disclose its charges.
