To be very precise, it is a way of driving that involves high level of control and concentration on the road, ensuring safety of the driver, his passengers as well as others on the road. Now, let’s have some learning of the basics of defensive driving:

  • Preparedness is the key to defensive driving! Think about every possible situation that could happen on the road and be prepared for each and every situation accordingly. Be focused on driving and do not allow your concentration to distract. Make it a habit to check all the essentials including tire pressure, oil, water and gas levels, just before you drive your car. Also check all the lights, especially before night driving and mirrors. Along, make sure that you have all the necessary documents pertaining to your car with you before leaving.
  • Avoid showing road rage and don’t react to the anger of other motorists as well. The color of a car also plays an important role in defensive driving. Generally, bright color cars are on the safer side than the darker ones, reason being they are easily seen. Some advantageous colors in defensive driving include orange, red and yellow.
  • Always, make it a habit to put the headlights of your car on while driving at night.
  • Always follow the three second rule of driving, which says a driver must always be at least three seconds of driving time from the driver in front in all conditions. In case of bad conditions, drivers should maintain five seconds of driving time though.
  • Never follow large vehicles, especially trucks and buses too closely in order to maintain a perfect visibility.
