Automotive Battery Safety

Automotive batteries have a rectangular casing (box), made of hard plastic. The casing further has two terminals on its top, of which one is positive, while other is negative. And inside, these batteries contain a liquid component, sulfuric acid. The acid is burned by the battery in order to produce electric current. Apart from this, batteries also contain various metals, such as lead.

Now, we know that (having a good knowledge of the components of the automotive battery) disposal of the battery is something that should be taken seriously. If not disposed properly, a battery can prove to be a dangerous contaminant to our environment. Contrary to the concept of disposal, an automotive battery is highly recyclable. Nearly ninety-six percent of its lead content can be recycled. Besides, its plastic casing can also be recycled. If you have an old battery, you can always give it to battery dealers and in return you may get a discount on the purchase of a new battery.  However, in case of disposal, proper guidelines should be followed in order to keep your surrounding safe.

Any leak of the sulfuric acid from the battery can be dangerous, since it is highly flammable. In order to stop the leak, you can spread calcium carbonate over the leaking area and saturate it with water. If the acid comes into contact with your skin, make sure you wash your skin immediately with water. If the burning still continues, it is advisable to see a doctor. To prevent any leak of acid, never turn over batteries to the sides or up-side down and keep their topside facing upwards. Also, never use metals or uninsulated tools when dealing with batteries, because the stored electricity may produce sparks, which further can cause a fire. Whenever you are required to deal with batteries, do not forget to wear gloves. As the battery produces and stores electricity, it could anytime send a shock through you!
