What Is Car Suspension?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

A car suspension system comprises springs, shock absorbers and linkages. This is the system that connects an automobile to its wheels. A suspension system helps the vehicle in numerous ways, such as-

  • It maximizes the friction between the tires and the road surface.
  • It provides steering stability with good handling and braking.
  • It ensures the comfort of the occupants.
  • It helps you drive smooth and pleasantly.
  • It protects the vehicle from wear and tear. (more…)

Summer Tire Maintenance

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

For many people, summer often means long road trips, with family and loads of gear. If you are one of these people, it’s time to prepare your vehicle, especially its tires for those long summer trips. When it comes to long distance trips, tire pressure automatically comes into the scene. Checking tire pressure before long trips will help you ensure a safe and happy vacation.

Checking air pressure in your vehicle’s tires is an inevitable part of car ownership. Unfortunately, most people do not do this! According to Larry Wolf, an automotive technology program instructor at WyoTech in Fremont, California, “The need for regular oil changes and annual tune-ups is pretty common knowledge. But consumer knowledge about tire safety unfortunately remains low. (more…)

Know About All-Wheel Drive

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

When it comes to buying a car, consumers consider the drivetrain as one of the determining factors. Now, what is drivetrain? Well, it is when you ask, does the car have front-wheel drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD or all-wheel drive (AWD)? This is something which can help you to know the differences and benefits of a car.

To be very precise, in front-wheel and rear-wheel drive alignments, only one set of wheels is being used to deliver power from the engine to the pavement. In a rear wheel vehicle, the two rear wheels are being engaged in handling acceleration, leaving the front wheels to focus solely on directing the vehicle (more…)

Importance Of Tire Rotation

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Tire rotation is one of the most important tire care measures that plays an inevitable role in improving tire life and performance. The process of tire rotation follows the practice of swapping the front car tires with the rear tires on regular intervals in order to achieve uniform wear and tear on all the four tires of a vehicle. Since tire is the only component of a vehicle that connects it to the road, it is very important to take good care of all the tires boast by a vehicle. Thus, tire rotation proves to be a vital practice of tire maintenance. It is essential for all types of vehicles.

However, tire rotation is more necessary for four-wheel drive vehicles, because with these vehicles most of the pressure is given on the front wheels. To be very precise, when a vehicle is being driven, various forces like braking force, steering force and the driving force are also being generated. In a four-wheel drive vehicle, all the forces act upon the front wheels, except the braking force, which acts upon the rear wheels. All these forces and heavy pressures result in wear and tear on front wheels, resulting in reduced performance and traction and poor handling. This is when the importance of tire rotation comes in. If regular rotation is not done, the front wheels will get damaged earlier as compared to the rear wheels. (more…)

Methods Of Tire Rotation

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Automotive tires are available in various types. And different types of tires require specific care and maintenance, including tire rotation. According to the types of tire, the principles of tire rotation differ. For example, if the tires of your car are
non-directional, they can be rotated in any direction. But, if they are directional, they can be rotated in only one direction. If you are familiar with tires, you must have noticed tire manufacturers imprint an arrow symbol on the sidewall of directional tires to specify which direction the tire should be rotated.

Further tire rotation can also be done in many different ways. However, which pattern or way you follow depends on the type and specifications of the tires. Following are some of the most common methods of tire rotation: (more…)

Tips To Enhance SUV Safety

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Those who are familiar with driving both sedans or sport utility vehicles, they would confess that driving an SUV is quite different from driving other vehicles. Driving SUVs is of course complex, thanks to their huge size, heavy weight and higher center of gravity. To drive an SUV, the driver should be extra careful and should be alert enough to apply quick brakes. Here are a few tips to improve the SUV safety on the road:

  • Handling: Because of their higher center of gravity,  SUVs have a greater risk of accidents. However, the risk can be reduced to a certain degree with smart handling. While driving an SUV, always maintain a steady speed. Attentiveness and cautious driving would definitely help you enhance, on-road safety. (more…)
