Diesel and gasoline engines are almost similar, since they are both internal combustion engines that are designed to convert the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical energy. But, the main distinction lies in the type of ignition. Gasoline engines basically operate on spark ignition, while diesel engines use compression-ignition in order to ignite the fuel. In a gasoline engines, the fuel is mixed with air, and then compressed by pistons and ignited by sparks from spark plugs. But, in a diesel engine, the air is drawn into the engine and compressed first, and after that the fuel is injected into it. This is done because air heats up when it is compressed, which helps the fuel to ignite.
